The Good Hatchery presents Sapphire Highway at The Lab

The Good Hatchery is proud to present documentation of Sapphire Highway, an artist-lead residency program that took place in the Autumn 2008. The project attempted to investigate the potential role of contextual art practice in isolated rural surroundings, specifically the terrain surrounding The Good Hatchery in East Offaly. Featured artists include Ronan Coughlan, Sinead Breathnach Cashell and Patrick Corcoran. The event will launch a publication documenting the artist’s work and the aims of the residency, it will also feature a slide show and discussion describing the outcomes of the project. All are welcome to attend the event at 6pm, Wednesday 14th January, in the Lab, Foley street. Refreshments will be served and catalogues will be available.

Elva Carri is the new artist in resident in The Good Hatchery. In June 2008 Elva graduated from the Limerick school of Art and Design with a first class honours in sculpture and combined media. Since graduation she has been involved in a number of projects including ‘Wheels Beneath Toys’ a collaborative project with Jessica Foley exhibited in This is Not a Shop as part of the Dublin Fringe Festival. Elva’s practice includes video, sculpture and installation in which she often employs a childlike language in an effort to expose a darker force at work in our society.

“Since arriving at The Good Hatchery, as well as settling in, acclimatising and learning to kick wood apart for the fire I have been researching the history and concept of the fairytale and attempting to find manifestations of comparable stories in the present-day: In the time of fairy tales like Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs, the wolf was not merely a metaphor but a real threat to peoples’ livestock and thus to their lives. We still mistake wolves for nice old Grannies and build houses of straw that are easily huffed and puffed down, but the wolf is not so tangible. I am using newspaper headlines to find the wolves that threaten our lives today in the hope of piecing together our complicated, contemporary fairytale.

Artist led initiatives, a discussion on artists creating their own futures
This forum will be chaired by Jacinta Lynch from Broadstone Studios with contributions from Carl Giffney and Ruth Lyons from the Good Hatchery. Over the centuries, artists of all disciplines, musicians, dancers, writers have reinvented, questioned and found new ways to see things and to make art happen. Many studios, residencies, exhibitions and symposia have been artist led; this discussion will explore the motivation behind these initiatives, the role of funding bodies and agencies in their development and the role these initiatives play in local and national cultural development.
All welcome €5

After the success of the Sapphire Highway residency, The Good Hatchery would like to invite applications for Orion’s Jumper; a three month residency beginning at the end of November 08. The selected artist will be provided with accomodation, studio space and a bicycle for the duration. A small fee of 175Euros a month will be requested which will go directly towards the further improvement of the building and workshop space. For further information on the residency and details on how to apply please contact Ruth Lyons and Carl Giffney at ruthenjoyslife@gmail.com . Deadline for applications is 10th November.

Riding the Sapphire Highway

September 12, 2008

Our flagship residency programme is in full swing at the moment, three enthusiastic artists are exploring unique approaches to art making in Daingean and the surrounding environment.

Ronan Coughlan

‘My work while at The Good Hatchery deals with offering people in the
locale ‘Free Help’. By ‘Free Help’ i mean offering my assistance with
any job or task for no charge. My reason was simple, a short exchange
with the individual or group in the old Irish sense of helping
neighbors for free . With this interaction i was hoping to gain a
better understanding of the Artists role in a Rural community.’

Patrick Corcoran

‘There is a theory that buildings and spaces hold a sort of atmospheric residue from their former use and past “experiences”. Through the use of video and sound, I am exploring the themes of fear, memory and the atmospheres of buildings which were once used by people.’

Sinead Bhreathnach- Cashell

‘I’m interested in playing in functional spaces alongside and with the other users who occupy them. I’m working with the Grand Canal in Daingean, the new ‘Tescos Extra’ in Tullamore and creating an alternative diversion in a layby on the N6 motorway. My intention is to connect with diverse audiences on their own terms through various subversive and absurd activities.’

In the coming weeks documentation of the artist’s projects will be published both on the website and in a catalogue to be launched in late autumn.
