Part 1.  Construction

As detailed in the open call below, Bravo Serotonin is a project taking place at the Good Hatchery from the 30th January to mark the beginning of 2012, the last year in the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar. Part 1 of the  project involves 24 national and international cultural practitioners from varied disciplines who will be collectively constructing a boat. Over the course of a fortnight a South American styled canoe will be carved from a large tree [seen above] felled by Hurricane Katia. Bravo Serotonin is time tabled to take place in the most challenging of winter conditions. After a series of test trips, the vessel will then voyage to various locations using the Irish canal network as its main infrastructure of travel. The locations and reasons for these expeditions will be decided collectively- as will the future of the project and boat.

Bravo Serotonin 

To mark the beginning of 2012, a new year of practice and the last year in the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, The Good Hatchery invites applications from visual artists to be part of Bravo Serotonin. The project will see a number of south American dug out canoes being carved from storm felled trees left in north Offaly in the wake of Hurricane Katia. Participants will be supplied with an axe, a portion of a tree, access to a sharpening wheel, workshop space, studio space and accommodation. Selected artists and members of The Good Hatchery will work in teams and individually. Bravo Serotonin ends with a canoe voyage along the Grand canal to a major Irish city. Please note that this project takes place in January and as such involves challenging conditions.

In addition to the canoe making, a parallel series of night time screenings and excursions will highlight some of narratives that Bravo Serotonin takes its influence from, including survival, independence and Irish cinema. None of the discursive nature of the project will be documented. It is estimated that the construction leg of the project will last from ten to fourteen days. Please note that The Good Hatchery is an artist led initiative that is in constant development and involves some aspects of DIY living.

Applicants will be notified when applications are received and will be replied to by January the 16th. It is estimated that Bravo Serotonin will begin on 30th January if conditions allow.

Palanquin Stills is a residential project hosted at The Good Hatchery featuring artists Phoebe Dick, Adrian Duncan, Cleo Fagan, Emma Haugh, Louis Haugh, Aine Ivers, Kevin Kirwan, Kathryn Maguire, Elaine Reynolds, Charles Stewart Liberty and Chanelle Walshe. It aim is to investigate the act of procession and documentary photography within the social and physical landscape surrounding The Good Hatchery in North Offaly.

The Good Hatchery will be hosting a day of event, conversation, music and food to mark the ending of Palanquin Stills. Remote conversations will be held with Latif Yahia (France), a security specialist who formerly worked as Saddam Husseins bodyguard before living in North Offaly for 9 years, and with Luke Sheehan (Lebanon), a writer who has experience investigating and writing about North Offaly. Sett Food Club will be providing food and light refreshments.

Dear friends,

A waste centre is in the process of development in an area very close to The Good Hatchery (four fields away) and, not surprisingly, the local council and its owners are very keen to get it finished as soon and as easily as possible. It will undoubtedly have an impact on The Good Hatchery and the surrounding area. It will be processing municipal and domestic solid waste at the centre to be built at Barnan, Daingean, Co. Offaly.

The local community is up in arms as it will have a great increase in truck traffic, noise levels and odour levels and a very negative environmental impact on the water table, surface water, air, the Raheenmore and Croghan bog sites. It will have a very negative effect on The Good Hatchery studios and the surrounding environment, which are both used by the 100- 150 people that visit The Good Hatchery each year to make art in.

We have set up an online petition to David Hogan, environmental representative for Offaly County Council and ask you, as a supporter and contributor to the arts, to stand along side us in opposition to solid waste being processed in Baran due to the awful impact that it would have on The Good Hatchery. On signing the petition an email will be sent to Mr. Hogan and a copy to The Good Hatchery to be used in the coming weeks.

Aerial Blue is a themed summer school for contemporary artists. This year’s focus is on islandism and the notion of insularity as a gateway to radical difference. Aerial Blue invites artists from across the world to come to Ireland for four days workshops, collective experimentation and island survivalism.

 In evolutionary terms, islands are breeding grounds for hyper-differentiation. Fantasy creatures thrive and multiply that would otherwise perish on the mainland. The margin of an island is also analogous to the position of the artist, at once feasting off the glut of influences and opportunities that wash ashore, and at the same time, wilfully standing in opposition to them. In the context of Ireland, a western sea-surrounded outpost of Europe that has recently endured a dramatic economic collapse, the condition of becoming islanded has become symbolic, and a rallying point for action, questioning ‘what is the land beneath our feet?’. The participants of Aerial Blue are asked, through collective experimentation, to construct ‘an island state of mind’ during an invited residency on a deserted island.

Details

The summer school will take place on Dorinish, an uninhabited rocky outcrop on the West Coast of Ireland that was formerly owned by John Lennon. After seeing this remote doldrum advertised in a transatlantic in-flight magazine, the iconic singer purchased the island, which soon became home to a commune of music lovers and spiritual experimentalists. The fellows for Aerial Blue will be the sole habitants and caretakers of this island during their residency and will be invited to present workshops, collective actions or propose ideas and concepts for investigation. 

Application

Aerial Blue will take place for four days from July 28 – July 31 2011 and is open to applications from artists, architects, film-makers, researchers and associated disciplines. Applicants are asked to offer a short statement of interest (approx. 200 words), samples of previous work and CV. It is important that the statement of interest clearly demonstrates an engagement with the theme of the summer school.

Aerial Blue  is the second edition of a mobile collective co-directed by Ruth E Lyons and Claire Feeley that began with Mercedes Fire in 2010.  The deadline for application is 2 June 2011. The school will be held in English although all nationalities are welcome.

Funding Policy

In response to recent printed press The Good Hatchery would like to clarify that we do apply for, and have received, capital investment from both public and private bodies. It is not our policy to refuse any funding from anyone. It is crucial to the development of The Good Hatchery and we are extremely grateful for all the support that has been generously given to us by many bodies and individuals.

This has included direct funding from The Irish Arts Council, Offaly County Council, Visual Artists Ireland and The Department of Tourism, Culture and Sport. Further funding for publishing and exhibition making has been generously given by Waterford City Council, Next Door Off Licences, Smart Ply, the Callan Community Network, the Callan Co-Op and the many galleries that we have worked with including Soma Contemporary, The Irish Museum of Contemporary Art and Place gallery. The many investments made by Eileen Hanlon and our other friends and families can not be understated.
