chrysiptera-springeri

The Good Hatchery is currently inviting applications for its spring time residency programmes. As part of its ethos, The Good Hatchery will be providing ambitious emerging artists with free accommodation and studio space. Selected artists will be asked to cover their household bills and share in the ongoing upkeep of this artist run space. This will include wood chopping and participation in ongoing maintenance projects. Applicants must be aware that many facilities at the Hatchery are basic and involve elements of sustainable living.

Residencies will be offered of various durations ranging from 2 weeks to 7 weeks and are available to art practioners from all backgrounds. Applicants with manual skills and their own transport are preferred but ultimately applications will be assessed on their artistic merit. Joint applications are also welcome.

Elva Carri is the new artist in resident in The Good Hatchery. In June 2008 Elva graduated from the Limerick school of Art and Design with a first class honours in sculpture and combined media. Since graduation she has been involved in a number of projects including ‘Wheels Beneath Toys’ a collaborative project with Jessica Foley exhibited in This is Not a Shop as part of the Dublin Fringe Festival. Elva’s practice includes video, sculpture and installation in which she often employs a childlike language in an effort to expose a darker force at work in our society.

“Since arriving at The Good Hatchery, as well as settling in, acclimatising and learning to kick wood apart for the fire I have been researching the history and concept of the fairytale and attempting to find manifestations of comparable stories in the present-day: In the time of fairy tales like Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs, the wolf was not merely a metaphor but a real threat to peoples’ livestock and thus to their lives. We still mistake wolves for nice old Grannies and build houses of straw that are easily huffed and puffed down, but the wolf is not so tangible. I am using newspaper headlines to find the wolves that threaten our lives today in the hope of piecing together our complicated, contemporary fairytale.

Artist led initiatives, a discussion on artists creating their own futures
This forum will be chaired by Jacinta Lynch from Broadstone Studios with contributions from Carl Giffney and Ruth Lyons from the Good Hatchery. Over the centuries, artists of all disciplines, musicians, dancers, writers have reinvented, questioned and found new ways to see things and to make art happen. Many studios, residencies, exhibitions and symposia have been artist led; this discussion will explore the motivation behind these initiatives, the role of funding bodies and agencies in their development and the role these initiatives play in local and national cultural development.
